Our Story
At Elsutra Foods, our journey began with a passion for sharing the rich flavors and cultural heritage of West Africa with the world. Founded by Balkisu Aliyu, a first-generation immigrant from Nigeria, Elsutra Foods was born out of a deep connection to the traditional foods of her homeland, especially Kilishi. This delicacy, made from thinly sliced beef, marinated in a blend of spices and peanuts, then sun-dried to perfection, has been a beloved street snack in northern Nigeria for generations.
Having lived in three different countries; Nigeria, the USA, and now Canada, Balkisu realized there was a gap in the global snack market for authentic, protein-rich foods that tell a story. Inspired by her heritage and the growing demand for high-protein, culturally diverse snacks, she set out to bring Kilishi to a broader audience. What started as a small operation quickly gained traction in Toronto’s multicultural foodie scene, with Kilishi being embraced by those seeking bold flavors and a taste of something unique.
